Does this kind of thing make students feel as though they don't have any power to bring about change? I'm a bit perplexed about why students don't take action, although I often hear them speaking about how screwed up things are.

Well..

honestly, I think it makes me feel like I have no idea of what is going on. True that I wasn't in the US when that footage was taken... but even now, how much do I really know about political decisions that are being made?

It is possible to draw fairly reliable conclusions by listening closely to the words, watching the actions, and applying a decent understanding of humanity. The sunday morning pundit shows can be painful to watch, but are very revealing if you understand how they use rhetoric.
